Cheese Strata
- 10 slices white bread, crust removed
- 1/3 c. butter, softened
- 3 c. grated sharp Cheddar cheese
- 4 eggs, slightly beaten
- 3 c. milk
- 1 lb. browned and drained sausage, finely crumbled or finely chopped ham or turkey ham
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 Tbsp. dry mustard
- pinch of cayenne pepper or 1/4 Tbsp. pepper flakes
- finely chopped parsley
- paprika
- Spread trimmed bread with softened butter.
- Cut each slice into 4 strips.
- Butter a 2-quart casserole and make alternate layers of bread strips, sausage or chopped ham and grated cheese, ending with the cheese.
- Beat eggs.
- Add seasonings and milk. Pour over top cheese layer and refrigerate for at least 24 hours, covered.
- Take out of refrigerator for an hour or so before baking so that it comes to room temperature.
- Bake at 350u0b0 for 40 to 50 minutes or until puffed and brown.
- Sprinkle with paprika and chopped parsley before serving.
- Yields 6 to 8 servings.
