Savory Cheese Bread
- 1/2 c. butter or margarine, softened
- 1/2 tsp. basil leaves
- 1/2 tsp. oregano leaves
- 1/2 to 1 tsp. lemon pepper (optional)
- 2 cloves garlic, smashed
- 1 large loaf unsliced French bread
- 8 oz. yellow cheese (Cheddar, Colby)
- 8 oz. white cheese (Monterey Jack is good)
- 3/4 c. warm (not hot) water (110~ to 115~)
- 1 pkg. active dry yeast
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 1/4 c. sifted Gold Medal flour
- 1 egg
- 1/4 c. soft shortening or butter
- Mix:
- In mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water.
- Add sugar, salt and about half the flour.
- Beat thoroughly 2 minutes. Then add egg and shortening.
- Beat in rest of flour gradually until smooth.
