Swedish Coffee Braid
- 1 pkg. dry yeast
- 1/4 c. warm water
- 1 c. milk, scalded
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1/2 c. softened butter
- 1 tsp. salt
- 5 1/4 c. all-purpose flour, divided
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tsp. ground cardamom
- 1 slightly beaten egg white
- 1/2 c. chopped pecans
- 1/4 tsp. ground cardamom
- Sprinkle dry yeast into warm water.
- Combine milk, 1/2 cup sugar, butter and salt; stir until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved.
- Cool mixture until warm.
- Stir in 2 cups flour.
- Add softened yeast, egg yolk and 1 teaspoon cardamom; beat hard.
- Stir in 3 cups flour (remaining flour is used as necessary for kneading dough).
- Turn dough out on lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic (8 to 10 minutes).
- Shape into ball; place in lightly greased bowl, turning once to grease surface.
