Unstuffed Cabbage

  1. Saute chopped onion in fat.
  2. Add to meat which has been placed in mixing bowl.
  3. Add egg, seasoning and washed rice; mix well. Set meat mixture aside while preparing cabbage.
  4. Slice cabbage into slivers or wedges of approximately 1/2 to 1-inch.
  5. Remove any pieces of hard vein from cut pieces.
  6. Place 1/2 of cabbage in large pot.
  7. Form meat into approximately 8 balls of equal size. Place on top of cabbage in pot and cover with remaining cabbage. Pour tomato puree over cabbage and add water to cover.
  8. Cook over low heat for at least 1 hour.
