Greek Macaroni Squares(Pastitsio)

  1. In a large frying pan, saute onions in butter until golden; add meat until browned.
  2. Add tomato sauce, cinnamon, salt and garlic; cover and simmer 1/2 hour or until thickened.
  3. Cook macaroni in salted water until barely tender (about 12 minutes); drain and rinse under cold water.
  4. Drain thoroughly.
  5. Butter a 9 x 13-inch pan.
  6. Alternate layers of macaroni, meat sauce and cheese. Dust with cinnamon.
  7. Pour custard sauce over macaroni.
