Chocolate Meringue Drops

  1. Preheat oven to 200u0b0.
  2. Line 2 large cookie sheets with foil. In small bowl with mixer at high speed, beat egg whites, cream of tartar and salt until soft peaks form.
  3. Beating at high speed, gradually beat in sugar 2 tablespoons at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Add cocoa and almond extract and continue beating until meringue stands in stiff peaks.
  5. Drop mixture by level tablespoonfuls onto cookie sheet.
  6. Sprinkle some chocolate pieces on top of each cookie.
  7. Bake 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  8. With metal spatula, carefully loosen and remove cookies from foil; cool completely on wire racks.
  9. Store.
  10. Sprinkle in tightly covered container.
  11. Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
