Gramma Behr Chocolate Cake

  1. Cut up 4 ounces bitter chocolate and 1/2 cup shortening in bowl; add 1 cup boiling water.
  2. Stir until melted.
  3. Add 2 cups sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 2 cups flour, sifted with 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda.
  4. Add to first mixture, then add 2 teaspoons vanilla.
  5. Bake in 8-inch or 9-inch pans.
  6. For 8-inch bake 25 minutes at 350u0b0; for 9-inch bake 20 minutes at 350u0b0.
  7. Depending on your stove, test the cake before taking out of oven.
  8. Use a wooden toothpick.
  9. It's done if the toothpick comes out cleanly.
