Hamburger-Rice Skillet
- 1 lb. ground beef or ground pork
- 1 medium onion, sliced and separated into rings
- 1 medium green pepper, coarsely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 c. medium grain rice
- 1 (16 oz.) can tomatoes, cut up
- 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
- 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp. dried basil, crushed
- 1/2 c. shredded American cheese or process cheese spread (optional)
- In skillet, cook beef or pork, onion, green pepper and garlic until meat is browned.
- Drain off fat.
- Add rice.
- Cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes.
- Add undrained tomatoes, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, basil, 1 1/2 cups water and 1 teaspoon salt. Bring to boiling.
- Reduce heat, cover and simmer 25 to 30 minutes or until rice is tender.
- Stir occasionally.
- Remove cover, if desired.
- Makes 6 servings.
