Fruitcake Cookies
- 4 c. sifted flour
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 c. vegetable shortening
- 2 c. brown sugar, firmly packed
- 2 eggs
- 2/3 c. sour milk or buttermilk
- 1 c. chopped pecans
- 1 c. candied cherries, cut in quarters
- 2 c. dates, cut up
- 2 (4 oz.) cans (1 c.) candied fruits and peels
- red or green candied cherries for top (optional)
- Sift flour and measure.
- Sift again with soda and salt. Cream shortening.
- Add sugar and eggs.
- Beat until light and fluffy.
- Add sour milk and flour.
- Add nuts, cherries, dates and candied fruit.
- Chill dough for several hours.
- Drop by teaspoonfuls, about 2-inches apart, on lightly greased baking sheet.
- Top each cookie with half a candied cherry.
- Bake in moderate oven at 375u0b0 for 8 to 10 minutes.
