Carob Oat Brownies
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon orange peel
- 1 teaspoon lemon peel
- 1 cup pitted chopped dates
- 1/3 cup chatfield carob powder
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup pastry flour
- 1/2 cup wheat germ
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/3 cup milk
- Combine butter and egg and beat well. Add vanilla, orange peel, lemon peel, dates and carob powder and combine thoroughly.
- In a separate bowl, stir together oats, flour, wheat germ, baking powder and three spices. Combine the two mixes, add milk and beat until blended.
- Spread batter in a 10x12 inch rimmed baking dish. Sprinkle with carob chips or nuts. Bake 25 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Cool on rack. Cut into squares.
