Mardi Gras King Cake

  1. Combine milk, sugar, salt, and shortening in saucepan.
  2. Scald, then cool to lukewarm.
  3. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a large bowl, then add eggs, lemon rind, nutmeg, milk mixture and 2 cups flour.
  4. Beat until smooth.
  5. Add remaining flour, a cup at a time. Knead on floured board until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place in greased bowl, turn, then cover with a damp cloth.
  7. Let rise in warm place about 2 hours.
