Old-Time Beef Stew

  1. In Dutch oven, thoroughly brown meat in oil or butter, turning often.
  2. Add 2 cups hot water and next 10 ingredients.
  3. Cover and simmer for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally to keep from sticking.
  4. Remove bay leaves.
  5. Add vegetables; cover and cook 30 to 45 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
