Golden Baked Onions

  1. In a large skillet saute onions in margarine until tender (about 12 minutes).
  2. In a bowl combine the soup, milk, pepper and 2 cups cheese.
  3. Stir in onions.
  4. Transfer to a greased 2 quart baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle with remaining cheese.
  6. Brush bread slices with melted margarine on one side.
  7. Arrange buttered side up over cheese.
  8. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes or until bubbly.
  9. If desired, broil 4 to 6 inches from heat until bread is golden brown. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.
