Billie'S Red Hot Cucumber Pickles

  1. Cover cucumbers with water and lime.
  2. Soak for 24 hours in an enamel dish.
  3. Drain and rinse until clear.
  4. Let stand 3 hours in ice water.
  5. Simmer very slowly for 2 hours.
  6. Drain and throw away liquid.
  7. Do not rinse.
  8. Make syrup by combining 2 cups of white vinegar, 2 cups of water, red-hot candies and sugar.
  9. Let boil and pour over cucumbers.
  10. Let stand overnight.
  11. Drain and reheat syrup.
  12. Pour over cucumbers.
  13. On the third morning reheat syrup; pack cucumbers in jars and pour heated syrup over cucumbers to fill.
  14. Store in dark place as light makes the color change.
