Chocolate Chip Meringue Bars

  1. Sift together dry ingredients; set aside.
  2. Combine in a bowl the sugars and shortening; beat until light.
  3. Add vanilla, egg yolks and water; beat until smooth.
  4. Add dry ingredients.
  5. Spread mixture evenly in a greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
  6. Sprinkle over top the chocolate chips.
  7. Place the egg whites in a bowl and beat until frothy.
  8. Add, while beating, the 1 cup brown sugar.
  9. Beat until the sugar is completely blended.
  10. Spread evenly over batter. Sprinkle with chopped pecans, if desired.
  11. Bake at 350u0b0 for 30 minutes.
