Grandma'S Fasnachts
- 1 cake yeast
- 1 c. milk
- 1 Tbsp. sugar
- 2 c. flour
- 1/2 c. warm water
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 3 Tbsp. butter or shortening
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1/4 c. sugar
- 2 eggs
- flour
- Scald milk and let cool.
- Dissolve yeast in warm water and add to sugar, milk, salt and 2 cups flour.
- Mix well.
- Cover.
- Let rise in warm place overnight or until double in bulk.
- Cream butter or shortening and sugar.
- Add to the risen sponge with beaten eggs and nutmeg.
- Stir in as much more flour as mixture will take up to make soft dough.
- Let rise again until double in bulk.
- Turn out on well floured board.
- Roll to 1/2-inch thick. Cut with doughnut cutter.
- Let rise again.
- Fry in deep hot fat. Drain.
- Shake in bag with confectioners sugar.
