Aunt Della'S Nine Day Sweet Pickles

  1. Wash cucumbers.
  2. Cut into chunks.
  3. Mix salt and water in given proportions enough to cover cucumbers; heat and pour over cucumbers, which have been packed in a stone jar.
  4. Let stand 3 days.
  5. Drain and discard brine.
  6. Make a solution of 3 tablespoons alum to 1 gallon water; heat and pour over cucumbers.
  7. Let stand 3 days.
  8. Drain.
  9. Cover with clear water and let stand overnight. Drain for 30 minutes.
  10. Replace in stone jar.
  11. Make solution of 1/2 gallon vinegar (white) and 4 quarts sugar.
  12. Tie 1/2 box pickling spices in a cloth and place down in jar.
  13. Let stand 3 days. Remove from stone jar and pack in canning jars.
  14. Heat vinegar solution to boiling.
  15. Cover pickles and seal.
