Old Fashioned Slaw

  1. Combine cabbage, celery, sweet pickle, mayonnaise, carrots, green onions and celery seed in a large bowl.
  2. Set aside.
  3. Melt butter in a heavy saucepan.
  4. Add pickle juice, salt and pepper; stir well.
  5. Gradually stir about 1/4 of hot mixture into egg; add to remaining hot mixture, stirring constantly with a wire whisk. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  6. Add dressing to cabbage mixture; mix well.
  7. Chill 1 to 2 hours before serving.
