Patty Melt
- 1/2 lb. ground chuck
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/8 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tsp. vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 4 slices rye bread
- 2 slices Monterey Jack cheese
- 1 Tbsp. butter or margarine
- Combine beef, salt and pepper and mix lightly.
- Shape into 2 patties.
- In a greased heavy frying pan, grill hamburger patties over medium-high heat 4 to 5 minutes per side for rare and 6 minutes per side for medium.
- Add vegetable oil to pan and then onions.
- Saute onions until soft and golden brown.
- Top 2 slices of bread with hamburgers, then with onions, a slice of cheese and remaining slices of bread.
- Lightly butter outside of sandwich and grill on a griddle or in a heavy frying pan until brown on both sides and cheese is melted.
- (If you prefer, you can make sandwich with rye toast and melt the cheese under a broiler.)
