1948 Original Barbecue Sauce

  1. Saute onion and garlic in butter in a saucepan until tender. Stir in remaining ingredients; bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered 30 minutes; stir occasionally.
  3. Discard bay leaf and lemon slices.
  4. Process mixture through a food mill, if desired.
  5. Use sauce for basting or serve with chicken.
  6. Yields 3 cups.
