Cookie Turnovers

  1. Mix 1 cup sugar, the shortening, eggs and vanilla.
  2. Stir in flour, salt and baking soda.
  3. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour.
  4. Prepare filling.
  5. Heat oven to 400u0b0.
  6. Roll dough 1/16-inch thick on lightly floured cloth-covered board.
  7. Cut into 3-inch rounds or squares.
  8. Spoon about 1 teaspoon filling onto half of each circle.
  9. Fold dough over filling; pinch edges to seal.
  10. Place about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
  11. Brush with milk; sprinkle with sugar.
  12. Bake until very light brown, 8 to 10 minutes.
  13. Immediately remove from cookie sheet.
  14. Makes about 4 1/2 dozen.
