Mother'S Brown Bread(Mors Grovbrod)

  1. Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup lukewarm water; let stand for 15 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, add 3 1/2 cups lukewarm water, molasses, salt, sugar and shortening.
  3. Add enough flour to make a soft sponge.
  4. Beat thoroughly.
  5. Add remainder of flour to make stiff dough.
  6. Knead dough well.
  7. May add some shortening to kneading surface to help kneading.
  8. Place dough in greased bowl; cover and let rise in a warm place.
  9. When double in bulk, knead again.
  10. Let rise once more, then shape into 4 loaves.
  11. Place in loaf pans.
  12. Let dough rise until loaves are double in size.
