Berry Good Thumbprint Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 375u0b0.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together shortening, butter and brown sugar.
  3. Add egg yolks and vanilla; blend well.
  4. Add 2 cups flour (one cup at a time) and salt. Combine until a soft dough forms.
  5. Roll into 1-inch balls.
  6. Dip into beaten egg whites; roll in chopped walnuts.
  7. Place 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  8. Bake cookies 5 minutes. Remove from oven; quickly, but gently press thumb into top of each cookie.
  9. Return to oven; bake 8 minutes longer.
  10. Cool on a wire rack.
  11. Place a scant teaspoon of jam in each thumbprint.
