Sourdough Bread

  1. Scald milk; add sugar, shortening and salt.
  2. Stir to melt sugar and shortening.
  3. Cool to lukewarm.
  4. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Beat together cooled milk mixture, yeast, starter and 2 cups flour. Add remaining flour to make a stiff dough.
  5. Turn onto floured surface.
  6. Knead 5 to 10 minutes.
  7. Add enough flour to keep from sticking.
  8. Place in greased bowl, turning to grease surface.
  9. Let rise until double, about 1 1/2 hours.
  10. Punch down; let rise again about 1/2 hour.
  11. Divide into two balls; cover with towel.
  12. Let rest 10 minutes.
  13. Shape into 2 loaves; put each into greased loaf pan. Let rise until double, about 1 hour.
  14. Bake at 400u0b0 for 40 minutes.
