Chocolate Halfway Bars

  1. Preheat oven to 375u0b0.
  2. Grease 12 x 8 x 2-inch baking dish. Sift flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder.
  3. Mix shortening, granulated sugar and 1/4 cup brown sugar until very light and fluffy.
  4. Add egg yolk, water and vanilla; mix well.
  5. Mix in flour mixture thoroughly.
  6. Pat into baking dish.
  7. Top with chocolate pieces.
  8. Next, beat egg white until stiff.
  9. Gradually beat in 1/2 cup brown sugar.
  10. Spread over chocolate.
  11. Bake for 25 minutes or until done.
  12. Cut into 32 bars while warm.
  13. Cool in dish.
  14. Makes 2 2/3 dozen.
