Kolacky(Nut-Poppy Seed Rolls)
- 1 c. lukewarm water
- 2 yeast cakes
- 4 1/2 c. flour
- 4 Tbsp. sugar
- 1/2 c. butter (room temperature)
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 egg yolks
- Crumble yeast into a small bowl.
- Add water and sugar; let stand in warm place until double.
- Place flour in large bowl.
- Add butter; blend with a pastry cutter.
- Make a well; add egg yolks, salt and yeast mixture.
- Mix dough until smooth and dough leaves the side of the bowl and hands clean.
- Divide dough into 4 pieces. Roll out as thin as possible (rectangular shape).
- Spread with filling (nuts and poppy seed, or any filling you wish).
- Roll and place on greased baking pan.
- Let stand in warm place for 1 hour. Bake at 350u0b0 for 30 to 45 minutes, or until brown.
- After removing from oven, cover with a damp towel.
- Keep covered for about 10 minutes; this makes a nice crust.
- Before placing Kolacky in oven, you can brush dough with egg white.
- Icing is optional.
