German Chocolate Cake

  1. Melt chocolate in boiling water; cool.
  2. Sift flour, soda and salt.
  3. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating after each.
  4. Blend in vanilla and melted chocolate.
  5. Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating after each addition.
  6. Fold in egg whites. Pour into three 9-inch layer pans, lined on bottom with waxed paper and greased.
  7. Bake at 350u0b0 for 30 to 35 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly pressed in center.
  8. Cool in pans for 15 minutes.
  9. Remove and cool on rack.
  10. Spread coconut-pecan frosting between layers and on top and sides of cake.
