Braided Bread

  1. Combine 1 cup of flour and the yeast in a large bowl.
  2. Heat water, 2 tablespoons butter, sugar and salt in a pan until lukewarm and butter melts.
  3. Add this to the flour and yeast, along with the egg.
  4. Beat at low speed for 30 seconds, scraping sides of bowl constantly.
  5. Beat 3 minutes at high speed.
  6. By hand, stir in all the flour you can mix in with spoon.
  7. Knead enough of the remaining flour to make a moderately stiff dough that is smooth and elastic. Cover dough and let rest 10 minutes.
