Cappuccino Bread Pudding

- 1/2 cup brewed espresso or 1/2 cup strong coffee
- 1/2 cup sugar, plus
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 6 large whole eggs
- 4 large egg yolks
- 3 cups half-and-half
- 3 cups day-old egg bread, 1-inch cubes
- 1/3 cup sliced almonds, if desired (optional)
- FOR CARAMEL SAUCE
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 3/4 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- TOPPING
