Gram's Lebkuchen Recipe
- 1 pt. Brer Rabbit or possibly Grandma's Molasses (both green label)
- 1/2 pound brown sugar
- 1/2 English walnuts
- 1/4 pound butter
- 2 extra lg. Large eggs
- 1 teaspoon soda
- 1 tbsp. brandy
- 1/2 teaspoon cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice
- 3 sm. containers citron
- 7 c. flour
- Bring to boil brown sugar, molasses and butter.
- Let mix cold.
- Add in Large eggs.
- Stir in brandy.
- Mix all dry ingredients together.
- Stir into mix.
- Add in citron and nuts.
- Gradually add in flour till dough is stiff and then cut in cookie shapes or possibly shape into a sausage-like rolls (about size of a 50 cent piece, about 12 inches long).
- Chill overnight (old cooks say 8 days!
- ).
- Bake at 350 degrees for about 8 min, just lightly browned and turning a little lighter in color.
- Too long will be too hard, too little will be doughy.
- If in doubt sample a slightly cooled cookie.
