Spiced Wine with Cognac

  1. Pour the red wine into an enamel saucepan and add a spice bag containing the cloves, allspice, cracked peppercorns, and the cinnamon sticks.
  2. Let the mixture stand for 1 hour and bring it just to the boiling point, covered, over moderately low heat.
  3. Remove the pan from the heat and let the mixture stand, covered, for 5 minutes.
  4. Discard the spice bag and stir in the Cognac, warmed.
  5. Divide the spiced wine among six 10-ounce heat-proof mugs, rinsed with boiling water beforehand.
