Hearty Beef Braise
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 500 g chuck steak, chopped Whole Foods 1 lb For $7.99 thru 02/09
- 1 onion, chopped King Sooper's 1 lb For $0.99 thru 02/09
- 2 carrots, peeled and chopped Target 2 lb For $3.00 thru 02/06
- 2 parsnips, peeled and chopped
- 2 sticks celery, chopped
- 2 sprigs thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 tablespoon MY FIRST VEGEMITE
- 1 tablespoon tomato sauce
- 8 cups hot water
- 1/2 cup green lentils
- 1/2 cup peas
- Mashed potato or cooked rice, for serving Safeway 2 pkg For $5.00 thru 02/09
- HEAT the oil in a large saucepan and cook the meat for 5 minutes or until lightly browned.
- Add the onion, carrot, parsnip, celery and herbs.
- Cover and cook for 8-10 minutes or until the vegetables have softened.
- SPRINKLE over the flour and cook, stirring for 1 minute.
- Add the MY FIRST VEGEMITE, tomato sauce, water and lentils.
- Cover the pan and simmer gently for 1 hour or until the lentils are cooked and soft.
- Stir in the peas and cook for 2-3 minutes more.
- Spoon onto serving plates with mash.
- Serve immediately.
- HANDY TIP: For an alternative serving suggestion for children, serve beef braise in a scooped out bread roll.
- Also, try serving the braise topped with mashed potato, similar to a shepherds pie.
