Uncle Bill's Grilled Cheese Sandwich
- 2 slices sourdough bread
- 2 tablespoons butter, divided
- 2 slices sharp cheddar cheese, 1/8 inch thick
- 3 slices tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick
- 3 slices sweet onions, sliced 1/8 inch thick
- 1 slice cooked ham, sliced 1/8 inch thick
- 116 teaspoon granulated garlic powder
- 116 teaspoon salt
- 1 dash black pepper
- Slice bread about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Butter one side of each slice of bread and lay the slices side by side.
- Place a slice of cheese on each piece of bread.
- Layer the sliced tomatoes and onions on one slice over the cheese.
- Place the ham over the onions.
- Sprinkle with granulated garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste.
- Close with the other slice of bread with cheese and gently press down.
- Butter the outside of the sandwich with remaining butter before placing on the cooking apparatus.
- If you are using a frying pan or griddle, preheat to medium-high heat.
- Place the prepared sandwich on the pan or griddle, then place a small plate on top of the sandwich and then add some weight to the plate (at least a 1 pound bag of legumes) so that the sandwich compacts while cooking.
- Cook for about 4 minutes, then turn over and replace the plate and weight and continue to cook for another 3 to 4 minutes or until the cheese begins to ooze out of the sandwich.
- If you are using a cheese sandwich grill or a George Foreman grill, then all you do is place the sandwich in the grill, close the cover and let cook until done.
- Serve with some sliced dill pickles and a bowl of soup of your choice and a glass of wine if desired (red or white).
