German Potatoes Made in a Rice Cooker
- 3 medium Potatoes
- 3 slice Bacon
- 1/2 medium Onion
- 2 tsp Chicken soup stock or consomme granules
- 200 ml Hot water
- 1 tbsp Butter or margarine
- 1 Coarsely ground black pepper
- 1 Dried parsley
- 1 tsp Grainy mustard
- Cut the potatoes into quarters.
- Slice the onion 1cm thick.
- Cut each bacon slice into 4 pieces.
- Dissolve the chicken soup stock granules in 200 ml of hot water.
- If you want a sharp, refreshing finish, add the grainy mustard here too.
- Put the butter, soup stock, potatoes, onion, and bacon in the rice cooker in that order.
- Add some coarsely ground black pepper to taste.
- Switch on the rice cooker as usual.
- When the signal sounds, it's done.
- Transfer to a serving plate and top with parsley...
- Now you have delicious German potatoes.
- Variation 1: Use pork instead of bacon and add a generous amount.
- Add 1 tablespoon of soy sauce or ponzu sauce, and it becomes like nikujaga (simmered potatoes and meat).
- I tried cutting a 300g block of bacon into 10 pieces, and using 300 ml of chicken soup stock to make the potatoes.
- ^^
- Not all the ingredients will be immersed in the soup, but not to worry.
- Be sure to put the potatoes on the bottom!
- I added a bay leaf too for its rich flavor.
- This is a version of German potatoes where the bacon is the star.
- If you slice the potatoes rather than quartering them, the flavors penetrate it better maybe?
- The potato pieces become really tender, and it looks more luxurious.
- Guest should be happy with it too.
- C-chan made it with sausages.
- She says sausages are good in this too.
- It was good with ham too, but the ham does get a bit tough...
- Here's a version with mukago (nagaimo yam bulbets) which have a limited season.
- This was delicious too.
- Here I used 1 teaspoon of soup stock and 1 teaspoon of curry powder for a curry flavored version.
- This was great too.
