Homemade Hot Chocolate 3 Ways
- 3 cups cold milk
- 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
- 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Kosher salt
- 1 tablespoon rum
- Whipped cream, for garnish
- Toasted coconut, for garnish
- 1 tablespoon Scotch, such as Johnny Walker Black
- Toasted marshmallows, for garnish
- Smoked salt, for garnish
- 1 tablespoon peppermint schnapps
- Whipped cream, for garnish
- Peppermint stick, for garnish
- For the base: Whisk together the milk, sugar, cocoa, cornstarch, vanilla and a pinch of salt in a medium saucepan.
- Cook over medium-high heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture boils, about 2 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to medium, and continue whisking until thickened, about 30 seconds more.
- Mix in add-ins as desired, and serve immediately.
