Hachee

  1. Add butter or oil to pan, turn heat to high.
  2. Add stewing beef, salt and pepper, allow to brown to a rich color, stirring from time to time.
  3. Add the onion and allow to caramelize along with the meat for a few minutes.
  4. Turn down heat to medium high.
  5. Add the bay leaves and stir through the mixture for another few minutes.
  6. Add the water and bring to boil.
  7. Turn down heat and allow to simmer for 1-2 hours.
  8. Check the seasoning.
  9. When meat is tender mix corn starch with vinegar, stir through meat mixture until slightly thickened.
  10. Add sugar for the right sweet/sour note.
  11. This should be suble.
  12. Serve over mashed potatoes, or even rice or noodles.
