County Fair Chocolate Cake

  1. Combine chocolate, 1/2 cup milk, the well-beaten egg, and 2/3 cup sugar in saucepan.
  2. Cook over low heat until thickened, stirring constantly.
  3. Cool.
  4. Stir shortening to soften.
  5. Gradually add 1 cup sugar and cream together until light and fluffy.
  6. Add vanilla.
  7. Add remaining eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each.
  8. Sift flour, soda, and salt together 3 times.
  9. Add flour mixture to creamed mixture alternately with 2/3 cup milk, a small amount at a time.
  10. Beat after each addition until smooth.
  11. Blend in chocolate mixture.
  12. Bake in 2 paper-lined 9x12 inch round pans in moderate oven at 350 degrees, 25-30 minutes.
