Backpacker Bars

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Cream butter with 1 cup brown sugar.
  3. Stir in oats, wheat flour, white flour, wheat germ, and orange peel.
  4. Press mixture in to bottom of an ungreased 9x13-inch baking pan.
  5. Combine eggs, almonds, chocolate chips, dates, apricots, coconut and remaining 1/2 cup brown sugar.
  6. Mix gently, but thoroughly.
  7. Pour over butter mixture.
  8. Spread evenly.
  9. Bake 30-35 minutes and cool before cutting into bars.
