Orange Cookies (Grandma Shepard)

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream the Crisco and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs slowly until blended well.
  3. Add sour milk and orange juice.
  4. (If sour milk is not available, mix 1 teaspoon vinegar with 1 cup milk.)
  5. Separately, mix baking soda, salt, baking powder and flour.
  6. Add mixture slowly to batter, mixing well.
  7. Drop a heaping tablespoon for each cookie, onto a greased cookie sheet.
  8. Bake at 350F (180C) F for 12 min.
  9. Cool on a wire rack.
  10. Should make about 3 dozen cookies.
  11. For icing, put melted butter in bowl and add powdered sugar.
  12. Mix together.
  13. Add grated rind.
  14. Slowly add orange juice until a very thick consistency is reached.
  15. NOTE: for icing try 2 tablespoons softened butter 1 tablespoon grated orange peel 4 cups sifted confectioner's sugar 2 tablesppons orange juice.
  16. In small bowl of electric mixer, combine all ingredients.
  17. Beat at medium speed until smooth and easy to spread.
  18. If too thick, add a little more orange juice.
