Old-Fashioned Brown-Sugar Barbecue Chicken

  1. Prepare grill for direct- and indirect-heat cooking.
  2. Combine ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar and mustard.
  3. Combine marjoram, salt, pepper and garlic powder; sprinkle over chicken.
  4. Place chicken, skin side down, on grill over direct heat.
  5. Cover; grill until browned, about 5 minutes.
  6. Turn chicken over and transfer to indirect heat.
  7. Divide sauce in half; reserve one part.
  8. Brush chicken with remaining sauce.
  9. Cover grill; cook until no longer pink near bone, 25-35 minutes, brushing with reserved sauce during last 10 minutes of grilling time.
  10. No-Grill Cooking: Preheat oven to 400.
  11. Place chicken on rack in shallow roasting pan.
  12. Roast 20 minutes; brush with one part of sauce.
  13. Roast 20 minutes, brushing with remaining sauce during last 10 minutes of cooking time.
