Satu Mare Stuffed Cabbage Leaves(Romania)
- 8 -10 large green cabbage leaves
- 1 lb. ground beef or sausage
- 3/4 cup rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 tsp. oregano
- 3/4 tsp. dried basil, crushed
- 2 eggs
- 1 - 16 oz. can tomato sauce
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 tsp. brown sugar
- 2 tsp. vinegar
- 1 tsp. cornstarch
- Boil water in 3 quart pan, add cabbage leaves and salt, boil for 5 minutes.
- Drain cabbage.
- Preheat oven to 375F.
- Mix beef, rice, onions, salt, pepper, garlic, oregano, basil and eggs, blend well.
- Spoon beef mixture onto cabbage leaves, roll up cabbage leaves.
- Place cabbage leaves in baking dish.
- Blend tomato sauce, water, brown sugar, and cornstarch until it makes a smooth mixture. pour over cabbage rolls.
- Cover with foil.
- Bake 40-45 minutes, spoon sauce over cabbage rolls 2-3 times while baking.
