Old Fashioned Beef Stew

  1. In oven, brown beef in margarine.
  2. Add Worcestershire sauce, bay leaves, garlic, paprika, ground cloves, 1 1/2 cups hot water and 1/2 teaspoon pepper.
  3. Cook, covered, for 1 1/4 hours; stir often.
  4. Remove bay leaves.
  5. Add vegetables; cook, covered for 30 to 45 minutes.
  6. Drain; reserve liquid.
  7. Skim fat.
  8. Add water to liquid to equal 1 1/4 cups.
  9. Return to oven.
  10. Combine cornstarch and 1/4 cup cold water; stir into hot liquid.
  11. Cook and stir until thickened.
  12. Stir in beef and vegetables.
  13. Heat through.
