Walnut and Syrup Loaf

  1. 1/ Grease a 2lb loaf tin, or use a greaseproof tin liner.
  2. Heat sugar, syrup, milk and sultanas in a saucepan.
  3. Stir until sugar dissolves.
  4. Allow to cool.
  5. 2/ Mix flour and salt in a bowl.
  6. Add chopped walnuts.
  7. Add sugar mixture and egg.
  8. Beat together.
  9. Put in prepared tin and bake in the middle of the pre-heated oven for about one hour.
  10. 180 degrees Celsius.
  11. 350 degrees Fahrenheit or Gas Mark 4.
  12. It is cooked when a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.
  13. 3/ Remove from the tin and cool on a wire rack.
  14. 4/ The cake improves with keeping.
  15. It becomes nice and moist.
  16. Serve sliced, spread with butter.
