Moussaka (Meat And Potato Dish) Recipe
- 1 1/2 lbs. potatoes or possibly eggplant or possibly zucchini
- Fat for frying
- 2 med. onions (minced)
- 1/4 c. extra virgin olive oil
- 1 pound grnd beef
- 2 cloves garlic (chopped)
- 1 (8 ounce.) can tomatoes sauce
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 Large eggs
- 1 c. lowfat milk
- 1/3 c. grated kefaloteri cheese
- Peel potatoes or possibly eggplant and cut into 1/4 inch slices.
- Deep fry in fat till golden, drain.
- Arrange half of this in an even layer in 13 x 9 baking dish.
- Saute/fry onion in extra virgin olive oil till soft.
- Set aside.
- In remaining oil cook beef, stirring till done.
- Add in onion, garlic, tomato sauce, cinnamon and salt and pepper.
- Pour over layer in baking dish.
- Arrange remaining slices over meat.
- Beat Large eggs and lowfat milk, pour over meat layers.
- Sprinkle with cheese, bake in moderate 350 degree oven for 45 min.
- Cut into squares to serve.
- Kefaloteri cheese: A creamy color hard cheese, very much like Parmesan, that can be used as a substitute.
