Vanilla Crescents

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Prepare 2 cookie sheets.
  3. Beat the butter and sugar until light and creamy, then beat in the walnuts and vanilla.
  4. Sift the flour and salt together and beat into the butter and nuts.
  5. Chill the dough for at least 2 hours.
  6. Dust your hands with flour and break off 1-inch pieces of dough.
  7. Roll each into a ball and shape into a crescent.
  8. Bake for 20 minutes.
  9. Cool on a cookie rack.
  10. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler.
  11. When it has melted, stir in the shortening, remove from the heat and cool for 10 minutes.
  12. Dip the crescent ends in chocolate and place the cookies on aluminum foil.
  13. Chill the cookies on the foil and then peel it off when the chocolate has hardened.
