Deep Dish Chicago Pizza Recipe
- 1 pound warm Italian sausage
- 1 lg. red pepper, sliced (about 1 1/4 c.)
- 1 lg. green bell pepper, sliced (about 1 1/4 c.)
- 1 c. (4 ounce.) fresh mushrooms, sliced
- 1 (15 1/2 ounce.) jar pizza sauce
- 1 (16 ounce.) pkg. warm roll mix
- 1 (8 ounce.) pkg. Mozzarella cheese, shredded
- Using fork, prick each sausage in several places.
- Cook sausages about 20 min in skillet, browning on all sides.
- Meanwhile, prepare warm-roll mix according to package directions, using 1 c. water but omitting butter and egg.
- After dough rests 5 min, pat proportionately over bottom and halfway up sides of greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking dish.
- Set aside.
- Heat oven to 400 degrees.
- With slotted spoon, remove sausages from skillet, and drain on paper towels.
- When cold sufficient to handle, cut into thin slices, set aside in medium bowl.
- To drippings in skillet, add in peppers and mushrooms.
- Cook over medium heat about 5 min, stirring occasionally till crisp-tender.
- Remove from heat.
- Add in to sausages in bowl along with pizza sauce.
- Sprinkle half Mozzarella over dough in baking dish; spoon sausage mix over cheese, top with remaining Mozzarella.
- Bake 25 min till cheese is warm and bubbly and crust is brown and crisp.
- Makes 8 servings.
