Upside-Down Orange Biscuits with Variation

  1. Combine flour, baking powder or salt; cut in shortening until mixture resembes coarse crumbs.
  2. Stir in milk just until moistened.
  3. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead gently 10 to 12 times.
  4. Roll into a 15x12 rectangle.
  5. Spread with butter.
  6. Combine the sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle over butter.
  7. Roll up jelly-roll style, starting from the short end.
  8. Cut into 12 equal slices.
  9. Place, cut side down, in a greased 9-inch round baking pan.
  10. Combine topping ingredients; pour over biscuits.
  11. Bake at 450F for 20 to 25 minutes or until lightly browned.
  12. Cool in pan 5 minutes; invert onto a platter and serve warm.
  13. Variation: Use 4 tbsp.

  24. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes.
  25. Combine sugar, butter, milk and vanilla extract; spread over warm biscuits.
  26. Serve immediately.
