Havurah Hallah Recipe
- 2 Packages dry yeast
- 3/4 c. lowfat milk
- 1/4 c. butter
- 2 tbsp. sugar
- 2 teaspoon salt
- 4 1/2 - 5 c. flour (white or possibly whole wheat pastry)
- 2 Large eggs
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tbsp. water
- 1 tbsp. sesame or possibly poppy seed
- Soften yeast in 1/2 c. hot water.
- Heat butter, lowfat milk, sugar and salt till sugar dissolves.
- Cold to lukewarm.
- Stir in 2 c. flour and beat well.
- Add in yeast mix, 2 Large eggs and beat again.
- Stir in sufficient flour to make a soft dough.
- Knead 8-10 min.
- Shape into ball.
- Place in greased bowl, turn once, and cover.
- Let rise, in a hot place, to double, approximately 1 1/4 hrs.
- Punch down.
- Divide into 3rds.
- Cover, let rest 10 min.
- Make 18 inch braids.
- Let rise again to double, approximately 30 min.
- Brush with egg yolk and 1 Tbsp.
- water.
- Sprinkle with sesame or possibly poppy seeds and bake at 375 in a preheated oven for 45-50 min.
