Old-World Raspberry-Cheese Squares

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a medium-size bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt and brown sugar.
  3. Using two knives or a pastry blender, cut in the butter or margarine until the mixture resembles crumbs.
  4. Stir in the cheese.
  5. Remove 3/4 cup of the mixture and set aside.
  6. Press the remaining mixture evenly into the bottom of an 8-inch-square baking pan.
  7. Spread the jam evenly over the crust.
  8. Sprinkle with the nuts and then the reserved crumb mixture.
  9. Press gently.
  10. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until golden.
  11. Cool completely in the pan.
  12. Cut the cooled pastry into 2-by-1-inch bars.
  13. Store, well-wrapped, in the refrigerator.
