Colonial Brown Bread
- 1 quart buttermilk
- 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
- 4 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 13 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon table salt
- Preheat oven to 350F Grease 2 loaf pans, 9x5".
- Whisk buttermilk and sugar until sugar is dissolved.
- In another bowl, whisk both flours with baking soda and salt.
- Pour buttermilk over the dry ingredients and stir together until there are no visible streaks of dry flour.
- Divide batter between prepared pans.
- Bake 1 hour in preheated oven, or until a knife comes out clean.
- Serve warm.
- Store leftovers tightly wrapped in plastic in the refrigerator; it reheats nicely and makes great toast.
